Our 2011 Honourary Chair:
Alan Craig, Executive Director and Karen Craig, Program Director, BA/RSW
Living Rock, Building Foundations for Youth

Karen Craig, Program Director, BA/RSW
Karen attended McMaster University and obtained her degree in Social Work.  Upon graduation, she was employed at the Hamilton Elizabeth Fry Society. She met Alan through a shared interest in supporting those with a correctional background.

Karen and Alan could not have been a better pairing for the vision for youth-at-risk that was growing from seed into reality. In 1985, Alan and Karen married. For the next 15 years, Karen worked at the Alcohol, Drugs and Gambling Services for the Department of Public Health Services, specializing in youth and addiction treatment.  During this time she developed programs for the Rock with Alan. After the purchase of the Living Rock’s current building in 1999, Karen joined Alan as Program Director for the Living Rock.

Karen and Alan continue to develop Living Rock’s Ministries while raising their two children.

Alan Craig, Executive Director
Alan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved to Canada at the age of 10.

Alan became an ordained minister in 1984, and started working in as a Chaplin in Corrections, shortly after College. His personal experience led him to become an addictions worker, and has helped him to develop strategies to reach youth who do not respond well to traditional forms of support.

In 1985, Alan started Living Rock Ministries, as the Founder and Executive Director.

Alan believes in the value of youth mentorship in the context of work crews and one-to-one relationships. Living Rock has just completed a three year evaluated initiative, sponsored by Public Safety Canada, for youth at high risk of gang involvement. Alan will share some of the findings.

You can find out more about Alan’s life by reading his biography and the history of Living Rock Ministries in the book “The Living Rock: Between Me & a Hard Place” by Alan Craig and Suzie Chiodo.
